What Does a Tankless Water Heater Cost in Los Angeles County?
Tankless water heater cost in Los Angeles County: the conversion price and what changes it
Tankless water heater cost is a national search with a national answer, a range too wide to be useful, because most tankless installations are priced after a plumber has seen the house. Water Heater Genius publishes a book price for the one case that can be priced before the visit: converting an existing storage tank to a Noritz tankless unit. That is $3,295 when the tank being replaced is 40 gallons and $3,695 when it is 50 gallons, installed, in every Los Angeles County city we serve. Every other brand, and every relocation, is quoted on site. This guide explains what is in that price, what is not, and what the permit and the county's hard water add. The pricing page has the list.
The short answer: one price, unit included
Water Heater Genius converts a 40-gallon storage tank to a Noritz EZTR40 for $3,295 and a 50-gallon tank to an EZTR50 for $3,695, installed, in every Los Angeles County city we serve: one number for the unit, the labor, new supply lines, a gas supply line and isolation valves. Other plumbers that publish tankless prices for the Los Angeles area list anywhere from $1,500 to $8,000, and the ones that show a breakdown price the unit ($600 to $2,600) and the labor ($600 to $2,500) separately, with gas line, venting and permit lines on top, so the total depends on how the quote is written up. Our book price sits in the lower half of what is published and is the whole number for the two EZTR models; the permit ($295 plus the city's fee) and $95 haul-away are the only lines on top.
What the conversion price includes
Removing the storage tank, installing the EZTR40 or EZTR50 on the existing hookups, new hot and cold water supply lines, a new gas supply line, and isolation valves so the unit can be flushed without shutting the house down. Hauling the old tank away is $95. A drain pan is $75 and a gas sediment trap is $225 where the inspector calls for them. The permit is separate and is covered below. The job is described on our tankless water heater installation page.

Why every other brand is priced after we see the house
A tankless unit burns gas much faster than a tank while it is running, so most models need a larger gas line, a different vent and a mounting spot the tank never needed. How far the gas run is, what size the line is and where the vent can exit are properties of the house, not the catalog, which is why a Navien, Rinnai, Takagi or Rheem installation is evaluated on site and quoted in writing before any work starts. The Noritz EZTR line was built for the swap-out case: top-mounted connections that line up with a tank's, a vent that reuses a typical tank flue path, and gas demand sized for the line a 40- or 50-gallon tank already has. The EZTR50 is our standard 50-gallon conversion. A venting upgrade from single wall to double wall is $250 to $450 where the inspector calls for it, and a circulating pump, a relocation, or a tankless unit in a home that never had a water heater is quoted on site.
The permit across Los Angeles County
Every city we serve requires a plumbing permit and an inspection for a tankless conversion. We pull it and stand the inspection for a $295 administrative fee plus the city's own fee at cost. Among the 9 cities whose current fee schedules we have read, the city's share runs from $29.57 in El Monte to $196 in Norwalk, so the permit line comes to between $324.57 and $491. Pico Rivera prices a tankless change-out separately, at $117. In La Mirada and Temple City the fee is set from Los Angeles County's own plumbing fee schedule. Our permit cost by city register has every office, phone number and verified fee. The inspector checks the gas line, the venting and the connections, and if anything is flagged we are the ones who come back to fix it.
Hard water and the yearly descale
A tankless heat exchanger has narrow passages, and the water across eastern Los Angeles County is hard: the 18 water systems whose reports we have read for the cities we serve range from 5.2 to 18 grains per gallon, and 13 of them are above the 10.5 grains that counts as very hard. At that level the manufacturers call for a descale flush every year, and skipping it is how a tankless unit ends up throwing error codes at year four. The yearly descale is $259, or it is included in the $199 per year tankless membership along with free diagnostics when a repair is needed. If a unit does fault, the tankless diagnostic is $299, includes the flush, and is waived if we repair or replace it.
Tank or tankless in Los Angeles County?
A like-for-like gas tank replacement is $1,595 or $1,795, so the conversion premium is real. What it buys is unlimited hot water on a single-family gas line, a unit on the wall instead of a tank on the floor, and a longer service life if it is descaled every year. If the tank is the better fit, our water heater replacement cost guide for Los Angeles County covers that side of the decision.
Tankless cost by city
The conversion price is the same everywhere we serve; the permit, the water and where the unit can go are not. Each city guide covers its own: Alhambra, Arcadia, Baldwin Park, Downey, El Monte, La Mirada, Montebello, Norwalk, Pasadena, Pico Rivera, Rosemead, San Gabriel, Temple City, West Covina, Whittier.

Frequently Asked Questions
How much does a tankless water heater cost installed in Los Angeles County?
$3,295 to replace a 40-gallon tank with a Noritz EZTR40 and $3,695 to replace a 50-gallon tank with an EZTR50, at book price, installed, plus $95 haul away and the permit at $295 plus the city's fee. Other brands are quoted on site.
How does the price compare with other plumbers in Los Angeles County?
Published Los Angeles-area tankless prices run $1,500 to $8,000, usually a unit price plus separate labor, gas line, venting and permit lines. Our $3,295 for a 40-gallon conversion and $3,695 for a 50-gallon is the unit and the installation in one number; only the permit and haul-away are separate.
Why is a Navien or Rinnai quote different from the book price?
The book price is for the two Noritz EZTR models because they use the existing water heater hookups. Every other brand needs its own gas line sizing and venting, so the price depends on the house and is quoted on site.
Do I need a permit for a tankless conversion in Los Angeles County?
Yes, in every city we serve. We pull it and stand the inspection for $295 plus the city's fee, which runs from $29.57 to $196 among the cities whose schedules we have verified.
How often does a tankless need descaling on this water?
Every year. The hardness figures we have read for the cities we serve run from 5.2 to 18 grains per gallon, and scale builds fast in a tankless heat exchanger at that level. The descale flush is $259, or it is included in the $199 per year tankless membership.
Do book prices apply after hours?
Book prices apply Monday through Friday, 8 AM to 5 PM. Pricing outside those hours or in an emergency is subject to change and is quoted at the time.
Why We Publish Our Prices
A tankless conversion is the biggest water heater job most households ever buy, and the one where quotes vary the most. Publishing the book price for the models that can be priced up front, and saying plainly which ones cannot, means you know where the number comes from before anyone visits.
